What is a sanitary landfill?

A sanitary landfill is an engineered disposal facility, designed, constructed and operated in a manner that minimises impacts on public health and the environment. A landfill is very different to an open dumpsite, such as the site that was operated at Patangata in Nuku’alofa in previous years. Although a sanitary landfill requires significant resources, it is designed and operated to protect the groundwater, surface water, soil, and air. Future generations should not have the legacy of old dump sites.
